GFSN Annual Tournament Newcastle June 2006

The GFSN membership voted for Newcastle upon Tyne as the venue for its 2006 Annual Tournament.  The whole weekend was a great success and consisted of the tournament and of course opportunities for socialising in the city’s gay venues.  The Annual General Meeting of the GFSN also took place.  In total, 17 teams from 8 clubs took part.  After the initial group stage of the tournament, the administrators worked out which teams would compete for the Shield (the top placed teams after the group stages) and which for the Vase (the lower placed teams).

The Yorkshire Terriers “Creosote” team took the Shield by beating the newly formed Mersey Marauders on penalties after a 0-0 draw.  In the Vase competition, Leicester Wildecats’ “Pussycats” team beat Village Manchester 1-0.  Damien Mooney from the Marauders was awarded Player of the Tournament and Leicester Wildecats’ “Kittens” the Fair Play trophy. We took the opportunity to interview players during the breaks between matches in order to gain their thoughts on the three questions below.

  1. What do you get from gay football?

  2. What if it didn’t exist?

  3. Where will gay football be in 5 years’ time?
You can hear the players’ responses to these questions.
