GFSN Annual Tournament Liverpool - June 2008
Liverpool was not only Capital of Culture in 2008, it also played host to the GFSN’s Annual Tournament. The Mersey Marauders welcomed 25 teams from 12 clubs across the country to the City with a sumptuous reception attended by the Mayor at the Town Hall – the city’s first ever gay civic event. The tournament was held at Liverpool John Moore’s I.M. Marsh campus and the Shield was won on penalties by Nottingham Ball Bois after a 0-0 draw against Village Manchester. The “Vase” competition was suspended this year as the unprecedented number of teams participating resulted in insufficient time in the schedule to allow for two separate knockout competitions – an indication in itself of the growing popularity of gay and gay friendly football.
Craig Nordon of Village Manchester 1 was awarded Player of the Tournament with the Mersey Marauders receiving the Fair Play Trophy. Hear the answers the players gave at the Tournament by clicking below:
- Why did you join a gay football team?
- Why do you think Gay Football is growing so fast and becoming so popular?
- What will the World Championship in London contribute to gay football and football in general?
