GFSN

The Gay Football Supporters' Network was formed in 1989 as a result of growing interest amongst gay people in supporting professional football teams.  Its mission statement is “to promote the support and participation of gay men and women in football.  The GFSN will work to establish a social network for gay football supporters, to encourage the formation of gay teams for players of all abilities and to campaign against homophobia in football, with a view to creating a safe and tolerant environment and to gain the respect and recognition for gay involvement in football.”

It is however, much more than a social network of supporters; it has been instrumental in encouraging the creation of gay teams and promoting safe spaces, free from homophobia, where gay people can be involved in football with respect and recognition. The group who began the GFSN saw it as part of their mission to assuage the myth that being gay instinctively meant a dislike of football.  It now operates a nationwide gay football league, campaigns on LGBT issues in football, produces a monthly newsletter containing reports from the regional co-ordinators in addition to its original remit of providing a network for gay football supporters.   For more information on the GFSN, click on the logo.  To learn more about an aspect of GFSN’s campaigns, click here.
